Critiques/Don't Be Prepared/Staying Limber on a Road Trip

1.  Have you ever been shattered by criticism of your writing? The Positive Writer shows how to give constructive criticism in a way that doesn't discourage or put down the writer. These are valuable tips for those who belong to critique groups or edit.

2.  Do you like a good devotional? Adelee Russell, at Rewritten, tells us, "Don't be Prepared." I don't know about you, but I'm a proactive sort of person, so I HAD to read this.

3.  Dena Netherton, at My Father's World, My Father's Words, talks about exercise on the road.

Cheat Sheet or Quick Reference Guide? Part II

Last week, we talked about Cheat Sheets and how they keep you from putting forth your best writing efforts.

When I read a craft book, blog post, or take an online course, I often think, "how am I ever going to remember all this material?" Well, the plain fact is I won't recall everything. Unlike a Cheat Sheet, a Quick Reference Guide is designed to summarize the important stuff without explaining every nuance related to the topic. It's a memory jogger, not a way to cut corners.

How do I construct a Quick Reference Guide?

1.  If a nugget jumps out while I'm reading a craft book or other educational tool, I jot it down. It's helpful to have more than one document or file with each focusing on a specific topic.

For example: I have a mental block with techy stuff.  "Now, how do I do an em dash?" I have the simple instructions printed out for quick reference. This way, I'm not searching the Internet every time I need an em dash.

2.  A short statement that gives me a fast definition of a term.

Jill Elizabeth Nelson's book, Rivet Your Reader With Deep Point of View,* drove a particular point home: Don't name your character's emotion. That simple statement keeps me on track when writing my novels.

I read this book while writing my second book, The Scent of Fear. One reader commented: "I don't know what you did in this book, but it's even better than the last one." I employed the principles in Jill's book to my writing.

3.  Writers Conferences

If you want to talk about cramming tons of information into your head, this is the place it happens. Many workshop presenters hand out notes to help you retain the material, but I rarely have time to go over them more than once.

I try to isolate the principles they're teaching and write them down. This helps me remember the highlights and apply them to my writing.

For example: Tim Shoemaker taught a workshop on Show, Don't Tell. He gave out a small tube and a lightweight ball. The lesson is embedded in my brain forever. I look through the tube at the ball. This represents what the Point of View Character sees, hears, and knows. This character cannot refer to what another character is thinking. He's not a mind reader.

These are the types of items that go on my Quick Reference Guides. Most of the time, they're not formal lists. They can be notes in a file that I can grab when I need them.

*I was unable to get the Amazon link to work in this post. This book is available on Kindle.

Writers: What Quick Reference Tips do you have for me?

Readers: Do you ever save household/DIY/craft or other tips to jog your memory about a subject? Please share.

A Little Bit of This, A Little Bit of That

I'm doing a switcheroo today from my usual Friday Round-Up. Sit back and have some chocolate. :)

Speaking of chocolate...

No, it isn't my birthday, but the picture is chocolate!

I discovered something startling at a recent doctor visit. The nurse went through the usual litany of do you smoke, drink, etc. Then, she asked about caffeine consumption.  "Coffee, tea, soft drinks, CHOCOLATE." Chocolate??? How did that get in there?

I hung my head and whispered, "Yes, I eat chocolate every day...but only a little."

I glanced up in time to see her eyes narrow. "Would you say one or two ounces?" I shrugged. Her pen poised over the chart. "I'll put down two ounces."

Have you experienced this line of questioning?

What is with Blogger these days? Or my computer for that matter.

Argh! I visit many blogs, and my comments go "pouf!" Gone. Disappeared into cyberspace. I was doing okay with the Name/URL thingy. Now, it's decided to eliminate my comments.

Please know that I do visit even if your blog won't allow me to add to the conversation.

Is anyone else out there having difficulties commenting?

One of the greatest joys I've experienced over the last couple of months is connecting or re-connecting with friends. Jeanette Levellie, of Audience of One, stayed with me during the Greater Philadelphia Christian Writers Conference where we met up with Elaine W. Miller, Susan Panzica, Kathi Macias, and a bunch of other writer friends.
People I haven't seen in 10-20 years are now emailing me. (I'm liking August, October, and November A LOT!)

Do you notice you're meeting folks from the past more often?

Have a blessed and safe weekend!

This & That - #7

I'm behind on my reading, so I thought we'd take a look at some fun and practical websites.

A friend tipped me off about a great, money-saving website called, "Hip2Save."Collin Morgan, military wife and mom to three children, shares deals she's found across the Internet.

Crystal Paine, at Money Saving Mom, not only has deals, but articles on being a better home economist.

Thanks to these two ladies, I've discovered some offers I would never have found on my own. How about you? Do you use coupons or frequent websites that talk about managing money?

Ah, and now for an award:

Thanks to Karen Lange, at Write Now, for this award. I'm a big fan of her blog, and I hope you'll visit her.

Terri Tiffany always manages to reach the heart with her blog posts. So, Terri, I'm giving this award to you.

This & That - #6

FYI - The Molly Contest is open to unpublished authors of romance fiction. Check it out here. While I appreciate all the awards, I've run out of room on my sidebar. Until I can figure out how to get them in a slide show format, I'm asking everyone to refrain from giving me any further awards. If you know how to set up a slide show, I'd appreciate some tips. Thanks! :)

This & That - #5

Many thanks to Karen Lange, over at Write Now, for the Sunshine Award. I hope you'll check out her excellent blog.

Shout out to Emily A., one of my Swagbuck referrals. Please contact me at susanjreinhardt (at) gmail (dot) com. :)

Speaking of Swagbucks, I'm three SBs away from my 10th $5.00 Amazon.com gift certificate. Pretty cool for simply using their search engine. If you're interested, contact me at the above email address, and I'll send you a referral.

Jeannie Campbell, at The Character Therapist, is asking her friends to take a sruvey on character stereotypes. It takes only a minute and will help her with an article.

1) Take the quiz yourself.

2) Blog/tweet about the quiz, giving the link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HZ9PMP7

3) Include it on any other social medical outlets you might use.

Thank you!

This & That - #3

Thanks to Mimi Baker, at Woven By Words, for the Happy 101 Award. I hope you'll check out her fun blog.

Shannon O'Donnell bestowed this award on me for commenting on her blog. I appreciate the honor, but it's you who deserves it most for your enjoyable site.

Okay, I'm supposed to share seven things about myself:

1. When I was a kid, I could keep a hula hoop going longer than most of the others in the neighborhood. (Now, I can't manage it at all!)

2. Once I got the hang of reading, it wasn't unusual for me to read seven books per week. (The library was hard-pressed to keep me supplied with reading material.)

3. I took two city buses to get to my high school--a character-building exercise.

4. My high school was across the street from a school for the deaf. I purchased my first sign language textbook as an adult. Eventually, I took classes, and now lead a Sign Language Worship Team.

5. Although I hated history in school, I love it now. Maybe all those historical novels influenced my attitude.

6. Chocolate is my favorite flavor. I don't waste calories on non-chocolate confections unless I'm desperate. I've been known to buy a vanilla frozen yogurt and make the clerk cover it in chocolate sprinkles.

7. I'm convinced they modeled Cookie Monster after me. Chocolate chip cookies are my favorite variety, but I also enjoy Oreos.

I'm passing on this award to two of my Blogger Buddies:

Kristen Johnson's, "Adventures of History Girl," blog entertains me with all sorts of history-related goodies.

Jan Cline shares her writing journey on her, "Precious Times Gifts by Jan," blog. There's always something interesting to stimulate my imagination and quicken my spirit.

I'd love to give out more awards, but I'm out of time.
