Friday Round-Up - #233

Daniel Darling posted an article on how to get started writing. He gives some great tips that can benefit beginning writers.

Writers:  Can you share some tips with newbies?

Readers:  Have you ever thought of trying your hand at writing? Did any of these tips help you?

Have a blessed weekend!

I write what I know and love. That's where I started, and it's where I'm at right now.

Not very technical or intellectual, maybe, but right now, it works for me. :)

Hi Rhonda -

I don't care about technical or intellectual. Writing from my heart is where I'm at also.

Blessings,
Susan :)

I've written for years in a business sense but started writing as a writer (meaning, not an employee) in late 2010 with the launch of my blog. It's where I met my supportive and inspirational writer friends, like you, Susan. ;-)

Thanks for asking! Enjoy the weekend.

The new look here is lovely, Susan!

I think there are aspiring authors who are more in love with the idea of writing than they are with writing itself. I usually suggest a person write and finish something first, then decide if the love of writing is still there. If so, put the draft aside and read a couple recommended books on the craft of writing before returning to revise it. Find a mentor or a good critique group and get feedback on the writing.

Only then is it time to research about the publishing industry -- read agents' blogs, maybe attend a conference, take a writing course, learn how to write synopses and query letters, etc. It's easy to become immersed in the writing community... getting engrossed in blogging, tweeting, FB messaging and all the researching, to the exclusion of actually doing any serious writing.

Of course, my novels aren't published yet, so you'd have to remember that before giving my opinions any serious consideration. :)

Hi Janette - I'm sure business writing and creative writing are quite different, but still gave you a good foundation. Thanks for your kind words. I'm glad we met. :)

Hi Karen - Thanks. As you can see, it's still being tweaked. Traci Little did a great job.

Hi Carol - Great advice! It's easy to get caught up in learning about writing without actually doing it.

Thanks for the compliment on the new look. It was time for a change.

Blessings,
Susan :)

I would like to write a children's book or help with a college text book (two very different areas, I know) but I've never said either aloud until now. I'm really just a big chicken about the whole thing, which seems silly even to me, but it's true.

Good luck w/your aspirations!

Hi Rosey -

Bravo for your courage to "say it out loud!"

Take a step each day toward your goal. If you look at the big picture, it can scare you. Why not try a short children's story before tackling a book?

Most of all, reach out to other writers for the support, encouragement, and tips you need to stay the course.

I hope you'll keep us posted. We're cheering for you!

Blessings,
Susan :)
