Friday Round-Up - #193

Gina Holmes, author of Crossing Oceans, guest posts on Chip MacGregor's blog. She talks about all the unplanned, serendipitous things that occurred on her journey from debut author to the bestseller list.

Published Authors and Writers: Do you have a story to share about an event or being at the right place at the right time?

Pre-published Authors & Writers: Have you had any "God Moments" that spur you on to publication?

Readers: How does a new book catch your eye? Is name recognition of both the author and the book a factor? Please elaborate.

Have a safe and blessed weekend!

Thanks for this Friday round-up (almost 200!) Susan. I think I need to get out of my house more to be at the right place at the right moment :)

Hi Marja -

Yes, we're getting close to the 200 mark with the Round-Ups. My 4th blogging anniversary is in May. :)

LOL! I went to a book signing one time and met several authors. Three of them have become good friends and have encouraged me in my journey.

Blessings,
Susan :)

I hate to admit, but the cover influences me when picking a random book - and the back cover blurb. But besides that I usually depend on recommendations from other readers.

I remember following Gina's progress on Novel Journey (now Novel Rocket). Before its debut, I posted a "Sneak Peek" of CROSSING OCEANS in January 2010 after I'd read only the first chapter and been captivated. ( http://wp.me/phaYw-uv ) I'm so glad it has received the acclaim it deserves and I'm anxious to get my hands on her DRY AS RAIN.

As Gina has acknowledged, the ideal publication team includes God. I know He has a plan for my future, too, and whatever it may be, I'll be content. My first public writing was a magazine article requested out of the blue by an editor, because he'd heard of my involvement in a non-writing-related event he wanted covered in an upcoming issue. That began more than a decade of freelancing for me -- something I wouldn't have otherwise pursued. It's interesting to look back and recognize God's hand in that situation, and it reinforces my belief He will work out the rest of His plan in His good time.

Great questions, Susan.

I have asked the Lord to guide my steps on the path he wants me to take with my writing. He's led me to blog friends like you, conferences where I met my agent and publisher, and to people that have helped me improve my craft. Many times I've been tempted to give up, but he'll send someone along at just the right moment to say, "You make me laugh!" or "I love your voice--keep writing." These are what I call hugs and kisses from the Lord.

Hi Jan - Recommendations from other writers/readers influence my choices, as well as personal experience.

Hi Carol - I've seen God's hand in a number of encounters with other writers/authors. I'd need a lot more space than I have here to elaborate.

Hi Jen - I like that: "hugs and kisses from the Lord." :)
