Springing Around the Net

After the awful winter we experienced, I can't wait for the forsythia bushes, azaleas, lilacs, tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and all the flowering trees to bloom. Spring gives me a burst of energy like no other season.

I've visited many blogger friends and found some great tips to jumpstart your creativity and be more productive. Enjoy!

1)         Edie Melson, at The Write Conversation, gives pointers on how to stay on track when writing an article.

2)         Danny Wong, at Shareaholic, talks about why they gave up using press releases and now use blog posts to get news to the general public.

3)         Blogging Bistro has an articled on how to craft a killer blog post.

4)         Karen Lange, at Write Now, posted a review of Julie Klassen's book, The Dancing Master.

5)         Cheryl Moore, a writer who loves to crochet, gives some wonderful ideas on re-purposing old sweaters.

A Hop, Skip, and a Jump

I've been hopping, skipping, and jumping around the Net. Here are a few posts I thought you'd find interesting.

1.  The BloggingBistro had an article on what to do if your Facebook account gets hacked.

BTW, when an established friend sends you a second friend request, their account has most likely been compromised. DO NOT CONFIRM THE REQUEST UNTIL YOU CONTACT THEM THROUGH THEIR BLOG OR WEBSITE. Ask them if they sent the request, and alert them to the possibility they've been hacked.

2.  Have you seen blog with a button to share the posts to multiple sites? I have and wondered how this was achieved. My publisher sent the link to Add This: http://www.addthis.com/?r=0  It's FREE. If this techy-challenged gal can get it on her blog, anyone can!

3.  The Write Conversation posted a fun list of special day in November. If you're looking for ideas, you may find one here.

Writers and Readers:  What social media tips have you picked up lately? If you've tried Add This, please share your experience. Has it generated more hits for your blog?

This & That - #6

FYI - The Molly Contest is open to unpublished authors of romance fiction. Check it out here. While I appreciate all the awards, I've run out of room on my sidebar. Until I can figure out how to get them in a slide show format, I'm asking everyone to refrain from giving me any further awards. If you know how to set up a slide show, I'd appreciate some tips. Thanks! :)

How To Back Up Your Blogger Blog

Jessica, from BookingIt, requested I check out ways to back up our blogs. Since I've also been concerned about this issue, I put out an S.O.S. to my Blogger Buddies.

Jean Fischer, from The Walrus and the Carpenter Blog, responded in yesterday's comments.

Our blogs can be saved through Blogger. Here's the link to a post giving detailed directions, including screen shots.

I immediately tried the procedure, and it worked without a hitch. Since it only saves what's currently on the blog and scheduled posts, mark your calendar and repeat the procedure every month or two.

All you Blogger folks out there give yourself some peace of mind and save your blogs.

SWAGBUCKS

Back in October 2009, a friend introduced me to a new Search Engine called, "Swagbucks."

By simply using Swagbucks, you can rack up points that can be traded in for prizes. I ordered $25.00 in Amazon.com gift certificates this week. Each $5.00 gift certificate costs 45 Swagbucks. When you sign up, they give you three Swagbucks.

Why not get something for all your Internet searches? If you click on the above link, you can sign up. If you have any questions, let me know in the comments section.

Extra, Extra! Hear All About It!

With Jaime Wright-Sundsmo's permission, below are the details of Baby Chloe Joann's arrival.

Hi all!

The long awaited day came Tue am at 3:06. Chloe JoAnne is here! Our amazing little gal arrived 3 weeks early with a healthy birth weight of 7 lbs 3 oz but with underdeveloped lungs.

She is currenty being incubated with nasal c-pap oxygen at the NIC-U. While she's not in danger its hard leaving her there at night and difficult for me being there without being able to lay down to recoup myself. (Though may I extol the amazingness of the epidural?!?!?!)

That's the news!! Thnx to all for your prayers the last 9 and would appreciate a few more as we cross the hurdle of getting our Chloe home sometime in the next week or two!

Congratulations, Jaime and Hubby! Let's keep Baby Chloe in prayer, so she can join her Mama and Daddy at home.

Reading As Fast As I Can

Wednesday is usually my book review/author interview day. The "to be reviewed list" has dwindled to zero. Maybe I should take one of those speed-reading classes, but that probably wouldn't work too well for me. Nope. I need to savor that unexpected twist, commiserate with the character's dilemma, and cheer when the bad guy is brought to justice. So, I'm stuck reading at my normal pace.

I'm reading, "Making Eye Contact With God," by my friend, Terri Gillespie. Also, on my nightstand is, "Havah," by Tosca Lee, and I'm half way through Brandilyn Collins', "Violet Dawn." For some unknown reason, I'm not getting as much "sit down and read time" as before. I've got a bunch of books waiting in line for my attention. (Can you hear them jumping up and down and saying, "pick me, pick me next?")

What's on your nightstand (or desk, or floor, or bookshelf)? Have you read any outstanding, eye-popping, heart-wrenching, or chilling novels lately?

Jury Duty

Yep, I got called for Jury Duty. I have to report bright and early tomorrow morning. Sooo, if I don't immediately respond to your comments, you'll know why.

Posts are ready to fly for this week and part of next week in case I get stuck on a case. I'll look forward to jumping in the conversation when I return.

Seven Random Facts About Me

Author Robin Hatcher posted a meme on her blog and challenged others to participate in the fun. So...for what it's worth, here goes:

1. As a kid, I suffered through piano and voice lessons for a year. Today, I can play an impressive arpeggio, a sad version of chopsticks, and possibly Old MacDonald Had A Farm. I say, "possibly," because I'd need the music, and I'm not sure I remember how to read it. The upside to this experience: I learned this is not what I was cut out to do.

2. When Billy Graham came to New York City in the 60's, my mother and I signed up as counselors and joined the choir. (Put me in a BIG group, and I can pull off the singing thing.) Cliff Barrows astonished us with his ability to teach several hundred strangers harmonies in record time. My choir pin still resides in my jewelry box.

3. Doll collecting is a passion, which carried over from childhood. Penny Playpal, Shirley Temple, and Toodles have traveled with me through 7 moves. I sure wish I had my Barbie. She'd be worth a pretty penny today.

I haven't added to the collection in recent years. There comes a point when you have to choose between furniture and dolls. Most of them are packed away from the last major move. Someday, I'd like to get one of those etegeres with glass shelves and display the darlings.

4. Growing up in New York City, the Bronx Zoo provided many forays into the exotic world of animals. Back then, the concept of showing animals in a natural setting hadn't caught on yet. Lions and tigers paced in old-fashioned cages, while mothers kept their young'uns from getting too close. The monkeys and elephants were the main attraction for me.

5. My high school was across the street from a residential school for the deaf. Thus began my fascination with sign language. Years later, a pastor's wife did a sign language special, rekindling my interest. After a bit of searching, I located a teacher at another church and took lessons for a year. (Methinks there's a pattern here.)

Eventually, I was part of a sign language troupe. I also signed the worship for our church services. Unlike piano and singing, sign language remains an important part of my life.

6. In case you haven't figured it out from my blog, purple is my favorite color. I decorate with it, wear it, and everyone associates me with it. My friends and family know they can't go wrong with color if they choose purple.

7. I'm a big Peanuts fan. I have a link to the Snoopy Dance on my computer compliments of my cousin. When I need to chill out for a few minutes, I hit the link and enjoy Snoopy, Woodstock, and Schroeder as they cavort to the Peanuts music. It's almost as good as chocolate. Okay, okay, let's not get crazy here. Chocolate always comes out way ahead. :)

So, I'm tagging Sarah, Jessica, Annie, and anyone else who'd like to participate. I can't wait to read seven random facts about you.

Protect Your Computer

I've read a number of blog posts concerning power outage woes. Several years ago, our new computer was nearly destroyed by a daily loss of power. My late husband went to our local office supply store and picked up a battery back-up.

The brand we purchased is the APC Power Chute. Whenever the power goes off even for a few seconds, the battery kicks in so you can power down the computer in a safe manner. The battery lasts about 3 years, so it's economical.

On My Nightstand - Only Uni

Only Uni, by Camy Tang, is a fast-paced novel. Trish Sakai is torn between her cultural roots, her old lifestyle, and a desire to live for Christ. She suffers many highs and lows as life choices and family members challenge her newfound faith.

Camy Tang had me groaning, laughing, and crying as she knitted together a patchwork of inspiration and the growing pains of a baby Christian. I think every believer could relate to Trish's struggles to walk the walk.

If you like a serious subject handled with humor and finesse, you'll enjoy reading Only Uni. To learn more about Camy and her books, visit her blog by clicking the link on my blogroll.

A New Look

How do you like the new blog design? Ashley and George, from Tekeme Studios, worked hard to capture my vision for the site. The process involved filling out a detailed questionnaire, emails, and a telephone call. George took all the information, graphics, my likes and dislikes, and came up with this super design. Another plus: their prices were easy on the wallet.

Their blog address is www.tekemestudios.blogspot.com. I'm posting a day early because they have a contest going on right now. They're having a drawing for a free custom designed invitation or postcard. Do you have a wedding, bridal or baby shower, birthday party, anniversary, or any other significant event coming up? Here's your chance to win a custom design. The winner will be drawn on June 20, 2008.

FYI

I've been exploring some cool websites for bloggers. There are many, which have royalty free images and music available. Believe it or not, I can't find the website address where I got this picture. However, if you Google Free images, you'll get a long list.

Here's a picture I found last night - one of my favorite flowers - the Rudbeckia Hirta commonly known as the Black-Eyed Susan. A dear elderly friend gave me a bookmark years ago, addressing it to Black-Eyed Susan along with a sweet compliment. Every time I see this flower, it brings back memories of him. I plant them every year in my garden.

Oops, I do get sidetracked every now and then. There's another website called, "Free Essential Tools for Bloggers." The link is: http://www.quickonlinetips.com/archives/2005/04/free-essential-tools-for-blogger/. Have a blessed day.
