Friday Round-Up - #213

Janice Hardy guest posts at the Bookshelf Muse. She gives examples on how to smooth the flow of your prose.

Writers: Do your paragraphs sound like lists? How do you detect the problem and fix it?

Readers: Do you prefer books written in first person or third person?

Have a blessed weekend!

  1. I love a well written book in first person. Siri Mitchell does this really well, and made me want to dabble in first person myself after that.
Most of what I read is in third person and I like that too, but there's something about a well written first person account which really grabs the reader.

    Have a wonderful weekend, Susan.

  2. The flow comes naturally, but I do check my work by reading it out loud. You can hear the flow, or lack of it.

  3. I did like the place where the author started the paragraph with what I guess is inner dialog. What a lot of work, and yet, I'm sure it helps things flow.

I don't care whether it's third or first person as long as a first person account doesn't have too much thinking involved. Sometimes it can get heavy handed.

  4. I'll have to click over to The Bookshelf Muse. Thanks for the link.

I prefer first person lately, but if it's a good story, well told, it doesn't really matter either way.

  6. Hi Dotti - I've read a couple of Siri's books and liked them very much. I prefer third person, but a good story in first person puts you in the character's head.

Hi Loree - Yes, reading a sentence out loud will emphasize any problems.

Hi Nancy - Interesting. I thought most people liked a lot of inner dialogue.

Hi Ruth - Like you, I'll read both. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Hi Karen - Me too! They always inspire me.

    Blessings,
    Susan :)
