Friday Round-Up - #179

Do you ever get frustrated at the gap between your vision for a story and the actual writing? Carol J. Garvin, at Careann's Musings, posted a video by radio personality, Ira Glass, on that subject.

She posed an interesting question on whether or not you'd really want to know the road would be long and difficult. What do you think?

    Considering I'm on Rewrite #1,000 on my wip (not really, but it feels like it!), I think I would have given up long ago if I'd known how long it would take. :)

    I still wonder weekly, if not daily, why I stick with this. The bottom line is that there are parts of writing and the dream that I still love, that keep me moving forward. It's when I lose sight of those things that Satan tip toes in.

    I'm quite sure I wouldn't have started if I knew the writing process would be so difficult. But then, I'm still glad I did, because there was some pleasure for me and others through it all.

    I'm thankful to take one step at a time. I can't say that I thought it would be easy, but some things (book proposals) require a lot more than I initially thought! Definitely a learning experience! Have a wonderful weekend, Susan!

    Hi Heather - I think our vision/motivation is critical to staying the course. When we lose sight of why factor, it's easy to get discouraged.

    Hi Nancy - I sure didn't know what I was getting myself into. Isn't God good that He gives us information on a need-to-know basis?

    Hi Maria - I've been on your site a few times, but didn't see anything new. I'll have to check again. :)

    One step at a time is the way to go!

    If I had known.... good question Susan. I sometimes tell my husband life was much easier before writing :) But every time I get a note, e-mail or comment from someone who was touched by my writing, I know it is what I have to keep on doing.

    Yes, the positive feedback means a lot to authors.

    I never realized how much was involved in writing. Learning the craft, marketing, the publishing scene, and social media all keep me hopping.

    Thanks for the mention and link, Susan. As in many things, maybe it's better that we don't know the future. But I wish someone had given me a shove in the direction of the best 'how to' books and websites a few years sooner than I found them. Stretching across that 'I know I can do it better' gap is an excruciatingly slow process as it is, but without some early guidance it takes some of a *very* long time. :)

    I love blogs because they've educated me on the publishing process. Writers groups, workshops, and conferences have also shortened the learning curve.

    I think for writing sake, I'm glad I didn't know.
    But I think it would have been nice to know how long I would take to learn the craft before I gave some embarrassing pitches at conferences. I thought I was ready. Boy, was I wrong!!
