Friday Round-Up - #180


Kay Strom wrote a tongue-in-cheek post called, "Adverbally Yours." I couldn't resist sharing it with all of you.

Have you ever gone back and read an old novel through your "writer's eyes?" I wonder what the rules will be like 20 years from now? Will adverbs come back into fashion like platform shoes, padded shoulders, and wide-legged pants?

    Did Agatha say "funnily?" The whole article was written funnily. I do like adverbs, but I do notice when I read old mysteries like that that the style is rather out of date.

    And it just doesn't sound right now, does it?

    Susan:
    I appreciated reading Kay's post. Do you remember the game called, "Tom Swifties?" The author couldn't seem to write any sentence without propping up the verb with an adverb. Some people made a word game out of it. Thank you.
    I hope you noticed I wrote this witout one adverb.

    Even some great books written in the 80s would have a hard time getting published what with the contemporary writing rules. Also, it's fun to go back to some of my old writing attempts and note how I've grown as a writer. Sure, I have a long way to go, but I'm getting there with each new day of practice!
