Kay Strom wrote a tongue-in-cheek post called, "Adverbally Yours." I couldn't resist sharing it with all of you.
Have you ever gone back and read an old novel through your "writer's eyes?" I wonder what the rules will be like 20 years from now? Will adverbs come back into fashion like platform shoes, padded shoulders, and wide-legged pants?
Have a great weekend!
What a fun article! Thanks for sharing, Susan! :)
ReplyDeleteI did read an old novel and wow how things have changed!!!
ReplyDeleteDid Agatha say "funnily?" The whole article was written funnily. I do like adverbs, but I do notice when I read old mysteries like that that the style is rather out of date.
ReplyDeleteAnd it just doesn't sound right now, does it?
Have a great weekend. sandie
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah - I'm glad you enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteHi Terri - I re-read Little Women and couldn't believe the differences.
Hi Nancy - Language changes. I purchased a book that gives word usage at different times in history.
Hi Sandie - Thanks!
Blessings,
Susan :)
Will hop over and check it out. Thanks Susan!
ReplyDeleteHave a good weekend,
Karen
Funny article, enjoyed it! Thanks for sharing Susan. Have a great weekend, blessings.
ReplyDeleteSusan:
ReplyDeleteI appreciated reading Kay's post. Do you remember the game called, "Tom Swifties?" The author couldn't seem to write any sentence without propping up the verb with an adverb. Some people made a word game out of it. Thank you.
I hope you noticed I wrote this witout one adverb.
Hi Karen - Enjoy your weekend!
ReplyDeleteHi Marja - Thanks for stopping by. I'm glad the post tickled your funny bone.
Hi Quiet Spirit - I miss adverbs and have difficulty leaving them out.
Blessings,
Susan :)
That book on word usage in history sounds very interesting and fun to read.
ReplyDeleteEven some great books written in the 80s would have a hard time getting published what with the contemporary writing rules. Also, it's fun to go back to some of my old writing attempts and note how I've grown as a writer. Sure, I have a long way to go, but I'm getting there with each new day of practice!
